It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of drug overdose. Overdose Awareness Day spreads the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable. “It’s providential that we gather for this vigil the night before we begin an entire month dedicated to Recovery. We gather to remember those we have lost, but that remembrance is not an empty one; it’s rooted in the hope that in years to come we won’t have to have such events.” - Father David Martins, Pastor, St. Therese Old Catholic Church, Exec. Director, RICARES“I know from my own experience and from the success stories I see every day, the key to long-term success in the fight against addiction and overdose is providing lifelong access to recovery support. We need to provide ongoing recovery support for addiction -- just as we do for other chronic, long-term illnesses. Why? Because recovery works. Every day at Anchor we see the power of, the possibility, and the reality of Recovery.” – Tom Joyce, Director of Recovery Supports, The Providence Center; The Anchor Recovery Community Centers“Though the suffering related to the opioid addiction epidemic is immense, coming together as a community is our hope. We honor the lives we have lost, we join together to ensure that anyone who needs treatment can get it, and we work to create an environment that supports many pathways to wellness.” – Michelle McKenzie, Board Chairperson of RICARES, Director of PONIInternational Overdose Awareness Day www.overdoseday.com aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. The Anchors are hubs of activity for the recovery community where peers help others. At any Anchor location, you will find a strong foundation for recovery with support groups, social activities and connections to community supports for housing, education, wellness and employment. The Anchor Recovery Community center recognizes that there are many paths to a successful recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol. The Drug Overdose Prevention and Rescue Coalition, convened in 2012 by The Rhode Island Department of Health, has grown from a handful of advocates to more than 100 members. Active members represent the state public health and behavioral health agencies, Department of Corrections, law enforcement, treatment providers, recovery organizations, healthcare providers, researchers, prevention councils, and other affected community members. The charge for the Coalition was to establish, and now implement, a state-wide strategic plan. Strategic priorities were informed by national and local research and published best practices.
